The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Parma will participate with the Department of Biomedical Biotechnological and Translational Sciences-S.Bi.Bi.T., which includes the Biomedical Sciences unit, the Pathology unit and the Maxillo-Facial surgery section (Project Coordinator). The Faculty of Medicine will also participate with the Radiology unit. The Maxillo-Facial surgery section is hosted in the Head & Neck Department of the University hospital under the direction of Professor Enrico Sesenna. Approximately 200 cancer patients per year are treated with minor or major surgery. A multi-disciplinary approach is adopted by the Maxillo-Facial Surgery unit, to ensure the best functional and aesthetic results for patients affected by Head and Neck cancers and to provide personalized care. The Maxillo-facial Surgery section can count on the collaboration of other University departments and also of hospital departments such as Radiology, Pathology, Biomolecular Labs and the IT support centre. The Unit is involved in major research initiatives at national and international level, such as the research protocol 24021 for the Sentinel Node Biopsy in the Management of Oral and Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma and the evaluation of immunohistochemical and biomolecular parameters as markers of the biological behaviour of head and neck carcinomas.

The Unit has led the FP7-ICT 224483 NeoMark project under the VPH umbrella, successfully completed in year 2011. Beyond the Maxillo-Facial Surgery section the following departments are involved: Radiology, Pathology and Oncology. The laboratories of the University Hospital will contribute for what concerns data provision on lab tests, the IT Unit of the hospital will be involved as consultant for technology integration.
